Pantone has released its 2021 Color of the Year and offered a dichotomy of optimism and reality to help balance our tensions nearing the end of this tumultuous 2020. Next year’s colors of the year are Illuminating (13-0647) a vibrant, ‘smiley-face’ yellow, and Ultimate Gray (17-5104) a middle-of-the-road concrete gray. Aspirational as always, spokespeople from the Pantone Color Institute noted how this year has highlighted everyone’s need for additional support, and that no one of us does it alone – and so neither does any one color. Additionally, after an unprecedented deluge of challenges for many of us in 2020, gray to yellow alludes to a “light at the end of the tunnel” we all hope to reach in early 2021.
